IoT sensor monitoring
platform

A multicloud high-load application streaming real-time metrics from seven sensor systems, deployable on any cloud with Kubernetes

Intelligent traffic monitoring platform

We integrated a suite of sensors — weigh-in-motion, ANPR cameras, traffic radar, video analytics, and environmental telemetry — and developed an application to process and stream metrics from all of them in real time.

The application is built as a multicloud solution running on Kubernetes, designed to be deployed on any cloud provider — AWS, Azure, GCP, or Hetzner — utilizing native components of each platform for optimal performance.

This is a high-load, real-time streaming platform that provides a unified view of the traffic situation and enables operators to react to road events as they happen.

Platform stack
Kubernetes — EKS / AKS / GKE / bare-metal
Real-time data fusion from all sensor types
Cloud-native messaging per provider
Terraform — full infrastructure as code
Deployable on AWS, Azure, GCP, Hetzner

Kistler Lineas WIM sensors

Kistler Lineas 9195GC31 · KiTraffic Basic 9835A

The primary weigh-in-motion system uses Kistler quartz sensors embedded in the road surface. The Kistler Lineas 9195GC31 piezoelectric sensors measure axle and wheel loads at highway speed, while the KiTraffic Basic 9835A processing unit classifies vehicles and calculates gross weight.

  • Per-axle and per-wheel weight measurement
  • Vehicle speed and classification
  • HTTP push integration with image capture
  • Real-time overload detection and alerting

CAMMRA ANPR on Axis cameras

FF Group CAMMRA · ACAP on Axis camera

Automatic number plate recognition runs as an ACAP application directly on Axis cameras. The FF Group CAMMRA system detects vehicles entering the monitoring zone and reads license plates with country-of-origin identification.

  • License plate detection and OCR
  • Country of origin identification
  • Vehicle direction detection
  • Event-driven (New/Update/Lost) architecture
  • Image capture per detection event

DataFromSky FLOW traffic analytics

DataFromSky FLOW · ACAP on Axis camera

AI-powered video analytics running as an ACAP application on the same Axis camera. DataFromSky FLOW provides vehicle counting by type, trajectory tracking, and traffic flow analysis using computer vision.

  • Vehicle counting by type (car, truck, bus, motorcycle)
  • Trajectory tracking and path analysis
  • Cursor-based polling with sequence numbers
  • Edge processing — no cloud dependency

smartmicro UMRR-11 radar

smartmicro UMRR-11 · TRUGRD platform

High-precision traffic radar providing per-lane statistics independent of visibility conditions. The smartmicro UMRR-11 sensor operates in all weather — rain, fog, darkness — delivering reliable traffic data 24/7 via the TRUGRD processing platform.

  • Per-lane traffic statistics
  • All-weather operation (rain, fog, night)
  • REST API polling every 30 seconds
  • Speed, volume, and occupancy data

Siemens PLC via OPC UA

Siemens S7-1500 · OPC UA server (opc.tcp, namespace 4)

The roadside cabinet is controlled and monitored through a Siemens PLC exposing an OPC UA server. The integration reads a 16-bit status word covering door state, UPS status, power supply, and temperature, with a PLC heartbeat for connection health.

  • OPC UA (opc.tcp) with namespace 4 and numeric NodeIds
  • 16-bit General_Info_STT status word
  • Door, UPS, power, and temperature monitoring
  • PLC_Sec heartbeat for connection health

Arduino Opta cabinet telemetry

Arduino Opta · REST API (GET /opta/telemetry)

An Arduino Opta edge controller monitors the physical environment inside the roadside cabinet. It tracks humidity, temperature, noise levels, CO2 concentration, atmospheric pressure, relay states, UPS health, and door sensor status.

  • Temperature and humidity monitoring
  • CO2 concentration and air pressure
  • Noise level measurement
  • Relay control and UPS status
  • Door sensor for physical security

Axis network cameras with VAPIX

The Axis cameras serve as the edge compute platform for both CAMMRA ANPR and DataFromSky FLOW analytics. Camera health is monitored via VAPIX HTTP digest API for device information and status.

Integration architecture

The platform uses multiple communication protocols to unify all sensor data into a single real-time stream

HTTP push

Kistler WIM and CAMMRA ANPR push events to the platform via HTTP webhooks with image payloads.

REST polling

DataFromSky FLOW (cursor-based), smartmicro radar (30s interval), and Arduino Opta (telemetry endpoint) are polled via REST APIs.

OPC UA

Siemens PLC communicates over opc.tcp with namespace 4 and numeric NodeIds for cabinet status and heartbeat monitoring.

VAPIX

Axis cameras are monitored for health via VAPIX HTTP digest authentication for basic device information.

Edge computing

ANPR and video analytics run directly on the Axis cameras as ACAP apps, minimizing bandwidth and latency.

Data fusion

All sensor streams are correlated in real time — matching WIM weight data with ANPR plate reads and radar speed measurements per vehicle.
